Together for Health: Why Thailand Stands with Science

6 April 2026
Reading time:

In a small village in Thailand, a community health volunteer visits households every week, asking simple but important questions: Is anyone feeling unwell? Have any animals fallen sick? Have there been unusual deaths among livestock?

These quiet conversations may seem routine. But they are part of something much bigger—a nationwide system built on science, collaboration, and community trust.

Thailand’s experience over the past decades has shown a simple truth: the health of people cannot be separated from the health of animals and the environment. From avian influenza to emerging zoonotic diseases, many of the health threats we face begin at the interface between humans, animals, and ecosystems. Recognizing this reality, Thailand has embraced the One Health approach, bringing together experts from public health, veterinary science, environmental science, and local communities to prevent and respond to emerging risks.

Today, this approach is supported by one of the world’s most extensive community-based health networks. More than one million village health volunteers, alongside thousands of livestock volunteers, help monitor health events at the local level and serve as the first line of defense against outbreaks. Their work complements national surveillance systems, laboratories, and research institutions that continuously analyze data and detect emerging threats.

Science is at the heart of this effort. Advances in laboratory diagnostics, genomic sequencing, and epidemiological surveillance have strengthened Thailand’s ability to detect pathogens early and respond quickly. These scientific tools help us move from reacting to crises to anticipating and preventing them.

Yet science alone is not enough. It must be combined with cooperation across sectors and borders. Thailand’s One Health partnerships bring together ministries, universities, international organizations, and communities to share knowledge and coordinate action. In a world where diseases travel quickly, collaboration is essential for protecting both national and global health.

As the world marks World Health Day 2026, the theme “Together for health. Stand with science” reminds us that evidence-based solutions and scientific collaboration are our strongest tools for building a healthier future.

Standing with science means investing in research, strengthening surveillance systems, and supporting the health workforce. But it also means rebuilding trust in science and ensuring that communities remain active partners in protecting health.

Thailand’s journey demonstrates that when science is combined with community engagement and strong partnerships, it becomes a powerful force for prevention. By standing together—across disciplines, institutions, and countries — we can reduce the risk of future pandemics and safeguard the health of people, animals, and the planet.

The future of global health depends on our collective commitment to science. And that commitment begins with working together.
